George Ilenikhena has described scoring on his Super Eagles debut as a major personal milestone after Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Madagascar.
The 20-year-old Al-Ittihad forward, who opened his international account in first-half stoppage time during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on September 25, said he felt both pride and happiness at the achievement.
Speaking in the days after the match, he called the goal “a very big step for me in my young career” and expressed hope that more would follow.
Ilenikhena explained that his focus before kick-off had been straightforward: to give everything for the team and try to find the net.
“Before the match, I was thinking to do my best, to give my best on the pitch, to help the team, and to score my first goal,” he said.
He also named Jay-Jay Okocha and Victor Osimhen as the Nigerian players who have influenced him most, adding that he intends to keep working hard to stay in the squad and contribute regularly.
Looking ahead, Ilenikhena said his role as a striker is clear and that he wants the debut goal to be the first of many. “As a striker, my job is to score goals and I hope that is my first of many and I will continue to work hard and give my best,” he stated.
