Victor Osimhen in Super Eagles Nigeria kit during AFCON qualifier match
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is on duty during AFCON 2025

Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen will miss the Super Eagles' opening matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, the national team said in a report on Saturday.

The Galatasaray striker has been ruled out of the fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau after his recovery from a right adductor muscle strain took longer than anticipated. Nigeria are scheduled to face Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before traveling to face Guinea-Bissau four days later on September 29.

The injury was sustained during Galatasaray's 3-2 victory away at Istanbul Basaksehir on September 4. Osimhen scored the opening goal in the 16th minute before being forced off 17 minutes later with a suspected muscle problem.

Subsequent scans at Acibadem Hospital revealed a moderate to severe strain with bleeding in his right adductor muscle, described by the Turkish club as a moderate-to-advanced-level groin injury.
