Former Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel has said the financial terms around Victor Osimhen prevented a potential transfer to Arsenal.
Speaking in an interview with Jackpot City Casino, Friedel said the overall package offered to the Nigerian striker in Turkey was too large for Premier League clubs to accommodate. The 27-year-old, who now plays for Galatasaray, had been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea during the last two transfer windows.
The Turkish club confirmed a four-year deal that includes a 15 million euro net salary per season, plus a one million euro loyalty bonus and five million euros in image rights.
Friedel, who briefly played for Besiktas, said he understands how deals are structured in Turkey and noted that such a package creates problems under England's financial rules. Arsenal reportedly asked Osimhen to lower his wage demands before proceeding, a request the striker did not accept.
Friedel said many English clubs likely made enquiries but did not advance beyond an initial call once the cost became clear. The Premier League's shift from Profitability and Sustainability Rules to a squad cost ratio system, which limits spending to 85 percent of football revenue, has made large net contracts harder to absorb.
