Ferencvaros forward Bamidele Yusuf wearing the green and white striped number 11 jersey celebrates with arms outstretched after scoring against Celtic at Celtic Park in the Europa League

Ferencvaros opened their UEFA Europa League league-phase campaign with a 3-1 victory over Celtic at Celtic Park in Glasgow on Thursday, September 17. Nigerian forward Bamidele Yusuf led the Hungarian champions with one goal and two assists, handing Celtic a second straight defeat in all competitions following their domestic loss.

Celtic were punished again for their defensive errors as they followed up their Old Firm loss with a 3-1 home defeat to Ferencvaros in their Europa League opener. The match was played at Celtic Park Stadium in Glasgow as part of the first round of the league phase, ending in a four-goal match where Ferencvaros beat Celtic 3-1 in the opening round.

The visitors took the lead in the 19th minute when Yusuf advanced down the right flank and fired a left-footed shot from outside the box that took a deflection off Liam Scales to beat goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo. Bamidele Yusuf opens the scoring for the visiting team after Tierney failed to deal with a cross and it fell to Yusuf before his shot took a final touch off Scales. Celtic equalized just before halftime through Mika Baur when Tierney sends the cross into Baur to slam into the net in the 44th minute.

The parity lasted barely a minute. Yusuf beat Tierney and Callum McGregor was too slow to clear the ball, leaving Kristoffer Zachariassen to flick the ball past Sinisalo for 1-2 in the 45+1 minute with an assist from Yusuf Bamidele. Two minutes after the restart, Yusuf again created the breakthrough after Colby Donovan was caught out and Arzani smashed the ball into the top corner, a goal recorded as 1-3 with an assist from Yusuf Bamidele.
