George Ilenikhena, a 20-year-old forward for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad, has received his first senior invitation to Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The Lagos-born player, previously with Amiens, Royal Antwerp and Monaco, was named in coach Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Nigeria host Madagascar on 25 September in Uyo and travel to face Guinea-Bissau four days later. Ilenikhena, who earlier represented France at youth level, has committed his international future to the country of his birth.

His selection follows a strong start to the season, in which he has scored six goals and provided two assists in nine matches across all competitions. Injuries to senior strikers, including Victor Osimhen, created opportunities for new options in attack.

Ilenikhena joined the national team camp this week and has already taken part in training sessions ahead of the Madagascar fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Speaking after training, the striker said he would work hard to demonstrate his ability to Nigerian supporters. “It is an honour, and I am very proud to wear the shirt because I was born here,” he stated, adding that he aims to contribute to team success in upcoming competitions. He shared the news of his call-up with his parents shortly after receiving it and expressed readiness to give his best whenever selected.
