Super Eagles' new striker George Ilenikhena has named Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and as the two Nigerian icons who shaped his football journey after scoring on his Super Eagles debut. 

The Al-Ittihad forward spoke after marking his first senior appearance with an equaliser in Nigeria's 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier Friday at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

During an interview with Sports Digital Africa after being asked which Nigerian football icon has influenced his career, Ilenikhena pointed to the past and present of Nigerian football. "I watched Okocha and now Victor Osimhen," the striker said,

The forward, who earned his maiden call-up from head coach Eric Chelle after Osimhen's withdrawal with a groin injury, also addressed his ambition to stay in the national team setup long term. "I will continue to work hard and do my best for the team on the pitch to always be in the team," he added, as he looks to build on a memorable debut and earn more caps through consistent performances this season.
