Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has admitted he is not yet fully fit after suffering a severe fever, just days before Nigeria begins its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The 25-year-old made the disclosure in Amsterdam after featuring for Ajax in the Eredivisie on Saturday, September 19. Arokodare, who joined the Dutch club on loan from English side Wolverhampton Wanderers in July, had missed Ajax's previous league match due to illness and was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench against Excelsior.
He came on as a second-half substitute and scored shortly after his introduction to rescue a 2-2 draw for Ajax, taking his tally to six goals and two assists in nine appearances this season. Despite the goal, Arokodare said his physical condition was far from ideal.
He explained that he felt exhausted after five or six minutes, with weakness in his legs that was evident during the morning tactical training session and during the match, AjaxLife reported.
Ajax head coach Míchel Sánchez had earlier confirmed that the striker had been battling a fever all week and was a doubt for the midweek game against Willem II, which Ajax won 5-1 without him.
