Nigerian strikers Victor Osimhen in Galatasaray jersey with protective face mask and Paul Onuachu in Trabzonspor jersey

Nigeria's build-up to the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers has been hit by injuries to two key forwards. Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray and Paul Onuachu of Trabzonspor are doubts for the Super Eagles' matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month.

Osimhen picked up a groin injury in Galatasaray's 3-2 win at Istanbul Basaksehir on September 4 and was substituted after 33 minutes, while Onuachu went off in the first half of Trabzonspor's 5-0 win over Gençlerbirliği after scoring twice.

The situation has sparked debate among fans, with former player Abiola Dauda calling for calm. In a widely shared post on X, Dauda said Osimhen will be missed but Nigeria should not panic. He argued the team still has quality strikers and highlighted in-form options in Turkey, including Gift Orban among the Süper Lig top scorers and Kelechi Iheanacho leading the second division.

The Super Eagles preparations have suffered a setback, but Dauda said in-form forwards should be given a chance to show what they can do.
