Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle addressed the media after Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Madagascar took the lead in the 16th minute through a headed goal by Ehsan Kari from a short corner. Nigeria equalised in first-half stoppage time when debutant George Ilenikhena finished a through ball from Alex Iwobi. Substitute Moses Usor, another debutant, scored the winner in the 65th minute with a solo run and low finish after coming on for Samuel Chukwueze.

Chelle described the performance as mixed but highlighted the team’s character. “This game was not bad but was not good too. Technically we were not very very good but at the end the state of mind helped us,” he said.

He added that the players “gave everything for the jersey, for the country” and that he was happy with their commitment after falling behind. The coach also noted a tactical switch to a 4-3-2-1 formation to attack from the wings against Madagascar’s low block, bringing on Moses Simon (for his 100th cap) and Usor for greater energy and one-on-one ability. He confirmed Chukwueze’s substitution was purely tactical due to fatigue, not injury.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made a key one-on-one save early in the second half to keep the score level. Nigeria controlled much of the possession and created chances but had to overcome an early setback against a compact opponent.
