Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 3-0 in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L match on Tuesday at Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau.
Nigeria struggled to create clear chances despite more possession. Coach Éric Chelle made changes at half-time and later, introducing players such as Moses Simon and others in search of a response, but the Super Eagles failed to score.
Concerns about the waterlogged pitch were raised beforehand and during the match, as heavy rain had affected the surface and Nigeria’s preferred style of play.
Speaking afterward, Chelle accepted full responsibility. “I apologize to the fans. Guinea-Bissau were the better side. The pitch is also bad, but we accept responsibilities,” he said. He added that the hosts were more aggressive and stressed that the result was not the end of the campaign.
