| Troost - Ekong speaking about AFCON 2027 at beIN Sports TV |
Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has called for greater consistency across Nigerian football, speaking during a live appearance on beIN Sports.
The defender, who led the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final and later retired from international duty in December 2025 after 83 caps, said the country sits at a point where stability must run from the Nigeria Football Federation through the coaching staff to the current group of players.
“We are at a point where we need to see some consistency and think from the top down, he stated. I think the talent is there in abundance.”
His comments come shortly after the team's uneven start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, which included a 2-1 home recovery against Madagascar followed by a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.
The former Watford and current Al-Ahli centre-back stressed that talent alone will not be enough. “That consistency is number one. But I do think that the team needs the structure and the backbone, and we can just rely ontalent alone he said.
He concluded that with the right consistency and structure in place, Nigeria could once again produce strong results on the continental stage. The remarks, delivered during a studio analysis segment, highlight the challenges facing the Super Eagles as they seek to rebuild momentum.
