Super Eagles striker Akor Adams has opened up about Nigeria’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match. The result came on 29 September 2026 at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly against Russia on Tuesday 6 October at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Adams said the team had accepted full responsibility for the poor showing.

“I think there are many factors that happen in the game, but it’s not a game we should lose, and we have to take responsibility for that. We have taken responsibility for it. It’s a game we prepared very well for. We knew how important it was to us in the qualification phase,” he said.

Adams added that the side was already working to correct the mistakes and knew how strong they could be when performing at their best.

The Venezia forward also addressed the pitch conditions in Bissau. While noting that a good surface should be the minimum for African football, he refused to use it as an excuse.

“We are professionals, and we should know that there are a lot of things that come with the game. The weather, the referee, whatever the circumstances, we should be able to find our way,” Adams explained.

He revealed the squad’s reaction after the final whistle, saying captain Wilfred Ndidi was particularly upset. “The captain was pissed at us, and I can understand from his point. Many of the boys were not happy and were completely devastated after coming away from a long trip without taking anything back home in an important qualification game.”

Ndidi has since withdrawn from the Russia friendly, with John Otomewo and Vince Osuji called up as replacements.

Adams stressed that the Super Eagles must now focus on the high standards expected of the team. “We have already set the standards very high. So, living up to that standard is what we wake up to do every day as the Super Eagles,” he said.
